If anyone was in any doubt that the Christmas celebrations were well and truly underway at Horris Hill, then Sunday provided the evidence to allay any such thoughts. The DIY Christmas and Art Room activities set the wheels in motion and then the chapel was transformed into a Winter Wonderland with holly, red berries, and very professional looking flower arrangements. During the afternoon the choir and orchestra were hard at rehearsals and many a Christmas tune was heard echoing around the passages.
The evening brought with it the first of our two Carol Services. Readers and the Choir were on fine form, and special mention must be made of the congregation whose singing raised the roof. After the service we moved into the Library for coffee and mince pies. Then it was back to houses for Secret Santas.
The preparations for these Secret Santas had been going on behind the scenes for many a week and presents of all shapes and sizes had been coming in by the car load. Of course, it should have been via reindeer and sleigh to be totally authentic but I guess an assortment of BMWs, Audis and VWs would have to suffice.
Watching a mass choreographed opening of a house Secret Santa is a spectacle worthy of note. Paper flies in all directions, gifts are held high for all to see, excitement levels peak and the room looks as though a bomb has hit it. Then five minutes later and it’s as tidy as any boy’s bedroom back home. Spotless.
Then it was cake cutting and a film. A special day.
