With much persistent rain and deep and heavy clouds leading up to our annual Fireworks’ and BBQ Night on Saturday, the casual observer might have felt it would need some fire-laden thunderbolt from Zeus himself to ignite all those little blue touch papers and assortment of coals. Not so. Our professional firework launchers and barbecue master chefs had all under control and a spectacular night was had by the hundreds of pupils, parents and friends of the school who attended.
Sunday saw several groups out and about and the Basingstoke Leisure Park did a very good trade with our lads for much of the day. Some were sliding fast and furious down the numerous water flumes at Aquadrome whilst others were sliding most gracefully and artistically on their skates on the Planet Ice rink. In fact, we’re rather good at sliding, as quite a lot of it was going on during the previous day’s football matches as well. In addition to all this, the Private Side boys were enjoying a visit to our local cinema, the Lego Club was designing machines that would either challenge any F1 Constructor or amaze any aviator, whilst our budding Lone Rangers were out and about on their horse riding trip.
In the evening we all attended chapel for our Remembrance Service which followed on from a visit for tea by members of the Royal British Legion. This particular service is always a lovely but poignant moment; a chance for the Horris Hill family to remember, not only those whose names are engraved on our two memorial tablets but all those who have suffered as a result of war. During the service the choir sang beautifully and the prayers and address allowed us all to ponder and reflect. It was a fitting way to end a busy weekend.
