ENGLISH
The main aim of the English Department is to foster a love and enjoyment of the language.
Its task is to prepare pupils for Scholarship, Winchester Entrance and Common Entrance examinations.
The Department’s approach is inclusive to all boys and their needs, as stated in the School’s policy on inclusion.
The Department aims to encourage and enable pupils to express themselves clearly, concisely and with confidence through written and spoken language, using the following means:
To give pupils the opportunities to take part in a broad range of speaking and listening activities, so that oral work becomes the basis for written work.
To develop the skills of reading to allow study of multi-cultural factual writing and literature suitable for the age range.
To enable pupils to use various kinds of written language effectively for creative expression and practical communication by extending their grammatical and syntactical skills.
To provide a base for continuing study of language and literature and to encourage independent study and learning, including the use of libraries, reference books and ICT.
To give pupils opportunities to work with a wide variety of prose, poetry, drama and factual material.
To foster a love of reading – fiction and non-fiction, prose, poetry and drama.
To provide enjoyment and stimulation to encourage a positive attitude towards every aspect of the subject.
Emphasis is placed on a thorough grounding in the basics of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Boys are taught to write with clarity and precision. At the same time, an interest in, and a love of, good literature is encouraged. Boys at Horris Hill read widely and well.
They also have the opportunity to take part in plays, visit the theatre, participate in debates, public speaking competitions, chapel services and assemblies.
