History

The fundamental aim of the department is to promote an interest in the subject both through the acquisition of knowledge and through the development of historical understanding. Interesting and broad-based teaching is encouraged and it is felt important that pupils should develop an appreciation of their heritage as well as an understanding about the ways that the past can influence the present.
Educational visits occur on a regular basis throughout the school and they are seen as an important part of the historical experience for the pupils. In many cases, these visits are of a cross-curricular nature, especially with the Classics department. It is felt that experiencing history, or ‘touching’ history is vital to the development of both the pupil and the subject as a whole.
Cross-curricular links with other departments such as English, Classics, Art, Music, Design Technology and Information Technology are encouraged.
Horris Hill lies on the site of an Iron Age settlement and Roman villa. Excavations take place each season with archaeologists from a local University and College of Further Education as well as local teachers and friends of the school. In certain cases, senior pupils are able to assist.
