Junior Department

The Junior Department comprises the bottom two forms of the school and most boys are of Year 4 age. The daily programme for these boys is designed to create a happy balance between academic, sporting and social life and to make the transition to our boarding environment a positive and enjoyable experience for all.
The two classes are form room based for approximately half of their lessons, taught by their form teacher for English, Maths and one or possibly two other subjects. The boys quickly adapt to moving around the school for the remainder of the timetable and thus benefit from specialist teaching at an early stage.
As is appropriate for their age, the Junior boys have a slightly shorter academic day which is followed by sport. On four afternoons per week, the boys then settle in their form rooms for a half hour prep session (English or Maths) supervised by staff. After some free time, an opportunity to watch TV ( Blue Peter and Newsround are popular) and tea, the boys enjoy a full and varied evening programme: from sewing to swimming, jigsaws to judo, baking to building dens in the woods….. the list is endless. During the Autumn term many evenings are devoted to rehearsals for our annual Junior production: an opportunity for all the boys to appear on stage, a real team effort.
There is always plenty going on at weekends too and a number of on campus activities and trips out are arranged particularly with this age group in mind. Camping, quad-biking, theatre visits and trips to London, Isle of Wight and the beach have been especially popular (see Extra-curricular for more details).
