Music
Music lessons are taught throughout the school, with the majority of pupils receiving two timetabled lessons each week. The boys listen to a variety of music, from classical to popular to world music.
Composition projects are linked to the historical period being studied and much time is spent in performance, either within the class or in the many opportunities that exist for public performance. There is a recording facility allowing live music to be recorded and produced to professional standards and there is a Music IT Suite.
There is a strong choral tradition at Horris Hill and there are three choirs which sing at the school services and concerts as well as in the community. The junior and middle school choirs are open to all, whilst the Chapel Choir sings four part cathedral music to a consistently high standard.
Around 85% of the school learn at least one of the wide range of instruments available. There are 12 Visiting Instrumental Teachers. Ensemble and group playing is encouraged as much as possible. We currently have a flute group, a bassoon quartet, two string ensembles, guitar group, percussion ensemble, brass group, bagpipe group and concert band. Boys have the opportunity to perform in public at our weekly assemblies as well as several times each term as part of the formal and informal concerts.
The boys have enjoyed much success in the Associated Board and Trinity Guildhall Music examinations and the more accomplished have been selected to play in the IAPS/Stonebridge orchestra. Boys are also entered for music awards to senior schools.
