Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)

PSHCE lessons underpin the philosophy and practice of Horris Hill. It is the means by which the curriculum can support the personal and social development of its pupils.

Personal and social education is not simply about a body of knowledge but a principle running throughout the school, emphasising the processes that develop and enhance the self-esteem and identity of the pupil: the ability to see each other as persons and valuing their differences and uniqueness.

With all this in mind, PSHCE aims to engender in all pupils the confidence, knowledge and understanding they need to live healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens. The syllabus acts as a natural extension of the individual, from within a home environment to becoming a member of the school environment and broader community.

At Horris Hill, therefore, the PSHCE syllabus aims to help pupils leave school, able to:

  • think critically
  • be self-reliant
  • be self-motivated
  • be self-disciplined
  • take responsibility
  • make choices
  • have clear attitudes and values
  • be able to co-operate with others
  • make and sustain good relationships
  • have an understanding of the world in which they live and the processes, cultures, values and principles by which it functions.

Additionally, it is hoped that all pupils at Horris Hill will:

  • have a positive self image
  • be honest, loyal and have a spiritual awareness
  • be independent, reliable and responsible
  • display tolerance, empathy and an awareness of the difference of others
  • be determined to perform consistently to the best of their ability
  • be curious about the world and respectful to the environment
  • explore learning in their own personal style
  • be able to persevere and learn from previous experience
  • be a problem solver and risk taker
  • be an effective communicator
  • be a co-operative learner
  • be healthy and resilient
