MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE GOVERNORS
I am delighted to announce that the Governors have appointed Dr Steve Bailey as the Headmaster of Horris Hill School from July 2021. After 10 years of exceptional service at Horris Hill, Giles Tollit will be joining Arnold House School in London. We thank him enormously for all he has done to maintain and develop the Horris Hill reputation for outstanding pastoral care and academic excellence.
Dr Steve Bailey is currently Headmaster (Interim) at Westminster Under School, previously having been Headmaster of Twyford School for nearly eleven years. Prior to becoming a Headmaster, Steve taught at Winchester College for 28 years, where he was Senior Housemaster, taught History to A level, English to GCSE and was a Head of Department. At Winchester, Steve ran the hockey, swimming and water polo and was Officer in Charge of the Royal Marines Section of the CCF. It goes without saying that Steve is well known amongst all the senior schools to which we send our boys. Steve and Giles will work closely together over the next two terms to ensure a smooth transition.
Steve was born and grew up in Hong Kong, travelling to England to boarding school from the age of 9. He is Chair of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Association, a member of the Executive Committee of the Boarding Schools’ Association and an experienced school governor. He has been a Boarding Team Inspector with the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate since 2009.
Steve has significant depth and breadth of relevant experience and is truly immersed in all aspects of independent education. What is immediately apparent is that the boys are his priority, as is continuing of the extraordinary legacy of Horris Hill.

On accepting the appointment, Dr Steve Bailey said:
“I am honoured to be joining the Horris Hill community in 2021 and to be playing my part in continuing to provide an outstanding preparatory education. The unique atmosphere and ethos at Horris Hill are very special and I fully believe in the enormous benefits of such an inspiring and supportive school environment.”
Current Headmaster, Giles Tollit said:
“Such a strong appointment is very pleasing: I am delighted to be handing over to Steve, whom I know well. Not only did we see each other regularly on Twyford v HH match days, but we also sat on the Boarding Schools’ Association Executive Committee together. He brings extensive experience of prep school leadership and senior school admissions, which will create a very smooth handover this summer.
