Academic Excellence

As a leading independent school, we combine traditional academic rigour with a modern, forward-thinking approach to teaching.

Our goal is to ensure every pupil receives a deep, well-rounded independent education without compromising on high standards of achievement.

In Upper School (Years 5–8), pupils study a comprehensive range of subjects that include English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Latin, History, Geography, Theology, Philosophy and Religion (TPR), Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Music, Physical Education, PSHE, and Information Technology. We are particularly proud of our continued focus on traditional subjects such as Classics, Advanced Maths, and separate Sciences, which are delivered with energy and enthusiasm by experienced subject specialists.

Our boarding framework allows for an extended and enriched school day. Pupils in the upper years benefit from a structured timetable that runs from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. This includes not only academic lessons, but also time set aside for prep, individual music practice, tutor support, and a wide variety of co-curricular activities. Crucially, this structure means that children work at school, but not at home; there is no homework at Horris Hill, allowing pupils to enjoy real downtime and space to relax in the evenings, whether in the boarding house, or at home.

By Year 8, pupils are thoroughly prepared for either Common Entrance or Academic Scholarship exams. Our track record is exceptional, with many of our alumni securing places at some of the most prestigious and selective senior schools in the country, including Winchester College, Eton College, Harrow School and more.

Horris Hill School offers a truly distinctive, and academically excellent prep school experience. To discover how we can support your child’s academic and personal journey, please get in touch with our Admissions Team to arrange a visit.
