Upper School (Y5-Y8)

Academic Excellence in the Upper School

At Horris Hill School, academic rigour is woven into the fabric of our Upper School (Years 5–8), where a broad and balanced curriculum is delivered in a stimulating and inspiring prep school environment. Subjects such as Classics, Advanced Mathematics, and the separate Sciences are taught with passion and depth, providing pupils with a strong intellectual foundation. Our subject specialists bring each discipline to life, ensuring lessons are both challenging and engaging.

All pupils study a full academic programme, which includes English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Latin, History, Geography, TPR, Art, Music, Drama, Design and Technology, PSHE, Information Technology, and Physical Education. This wide-ranging curriculum reflects our belief in educating the whole child, developing not only academic strengths but also creativity, curiosity, and confidence.

Our unique boarding framework allows us to extend the school day, offering significantly more teaching time than many other schools. For pupils in the final years, the day runs from 8.30am to 6.30pm, incorporating prep, subject lessons, one-to-one tutor sessions, music practice, and a rich variety of afternoon activities. Importantly, all academic work is completed during school hours - there is no homework at Horris Hill! - ensuring children can fully relax and recharge during evenings at home or in boarding.

In Year 8, pupils are thoroughly prepared for both Common Entrance and Academic Scholarship examinations. Horris Hill has an exceptional track record of success, with pupils gaining places at many of the country’s most prestigious senior schools. In recent years, our pupils have gone on to the likes of Eton, Radley, Harrow, Winchester, Marlborough, and Clifton College, reflecting the high standards of teaching and bespoke preparation we provide each child.

At Horris Hill, we aim not only to educate, but to inspire, and to equip every pupil with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed at the very highest level.

Beyond the classroom, pupils have access to a vibrant co-curricular programme, with opportunities to develop new interests and skills through a wide range of clubs and activities, including debating, drama, chess, and more. These sessions not only enrich the school experience but also help build confidence, creativity, and independent thinking.
