Lower School (Reception-Y2)

Welcome from the Head of Lower School

I firmly believe that magic, awe, and wonder must be at the heart of a child’s early education. At Horris Hill School, an independent school nestled in the Newbury countryside, this philosophy guides everything we do in the Lower School.

High aspirations are fundamental to our approach. From the very beginning in Reception through to Year 2, we nurture lifelong learners who embrace challenge, curiosity, and adventure. These are vital years, and our goal is to instil a deep love of learning that stays with them for life.

Our curriculum is bespoke, child-led, and most importantly - fun! It is carefully designed to reflect the needs and interests of each child. Our holistic programme is immersive, fast-paced, and full of energy, drawing out the very best in every pupil.

Children learn best when academic rigour is balanced with time outdoors. Our Horris Hill Wild Child Charter celebrates the transformative power of nature in education. Outdoor learning is not a break from lessons—it is the lesson. Whether building dens, pond dipping, or solving problems through active games, these experiences develop resilience, independence, and a strong connection to the world around them. We champion the benefits of an unplugged childhood, where play, exploration, and collaboration come before screens.

At the same time, we recognise the importance of preparing children for a digital world. Our approach to technology is age-appropriate and purposeful. From early coding concepts to creative use of digital tools, we teach children how to engage with technology safely and thoughtfully, ensuring they are both grounded and future-ready.

By the time our pupils move into the Upper School Transition Years (Years 3 and 4), they carry with them a secure foundation built on joyful discovery, academic strength, and a rich tapestry of meaningful experiences.

We warmly invite you to visit Horris Hill and experience the magic of our Lower School in person. Whether you're exploring options for Reception or thinking ahead to Year 2, there's no better way to understand what makes our school so special.
