Cross Country Success in West Berkshire

Recently, pupils from Horris Hill School took part in the West Berkshire County Schools Cross Country Championships at Newbury Showground - an exciting and historic occasion that saw a UK record broken, with over 1,600 young athletes crossing the finish line.
The event brought together schools from across the region for a large-scale competition designed to challenge pupils, foster teamwork, and provide an unforgettable sporting experience. Representing Horris Hill with pride and determination, our pupils competed across all age categories: Year 3 and 4 girls, Year 3 and 4 boys, Year 5 and 6 girls, and Year 5 and 6 boys.
From the moment the races began at midday, each pupil gave their all, taking on the varied terrain of the Showground with courage and enthusiasm. The course was a true test of stamina, featuring undulating fields and uneven ground - but our runners rose to the challenge.
Horris Hill athletes gave consistently strong performances across all races, with several finishing within the top 100 out of fields numbering in the hundreds. One of our Year 4 girls delivered a remarkable run to finish 6th out of 439 competitors, while a boy in the same year group earned a fantastic 11th place in his highly competitive race.
The atmosphere on the day was electric, with cheering teammates and supporters lining the course. The spirit of camaraderie was evident throughout the day, as teammates cheered each other on and showed real encouragement from start to finish. Everyone gave their all, displaying great perseverance and commitment. One particularly memorable moment saw a pupil continue racing after losing a shoe mid-run - undeterred, he picked it up and kept going! Elsewhere, two Horris Hill girls demonstrated great sportsmanship as they paused to help a fellow runner who had fallen.
Events like this are a vital part of the Horris Hill experience. They allow our pupils to set personal goals, discover the rewards of perseverance, and support one another as a team. We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part and represented the school with such determination, resilience, and character.
