The School Week

A Busy and Fulfilling Week

Your child is guaranteed a busy, purposeful, and fulfilling week at Horris Hill School; a place where every moment of the day is thoughtfully planned to support academic achievement, personal growth, and wellbeing. In Years 5 - 8 we prepare each individual pupil for progression onto the senior school that best suits their individual talents and flair.

The day begins with a nourishing start: boarders, along with day pupils who choose to arrive early, enjoy a delicious, cooked breakfast served in the dining hall. For those who eat breakfast at home, the school day begins with drop-off at 8.05am. At 8.25am, the school bell rings to signal the start of the day, and by 8.30am, pupils gather for either Assembly or Chapel. Form time registration follows at 8.45am, with academic lessons commencing at 9.00am.

Pupils enjoy a well-earned morning break at 11.00am, followed by continued lessons until 1.00pm. A home-cooked lunch is then served in the dining hall, where pupils dine together in a warm, social setting. The afternoon programme resumes after registration, with lessons running until 2.50pm, when children change for Games and spend time outdoors engaging in physical activity and team sports, with regular fixtures against other independent schools, until 4.10pm.

After sport, pupils refuel with a snack, traditionally known at Horris Hill as 'cocoa', before settling into Prep time from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. Supper is served at 6.00pm for Years 5–8, followed by optional evening activities until 7.30pm.

Parents can choose from a range of flexible pick-up times: 5.00pm, 6.00pm, 6.30pm, or 7.30pm, depending on their child’s schedule and preferences.

In keeping with our traditional prep and boarding school ethos, Saturday School is compulsory for pupils in Years 5 and above. The morning includes academic lessons, while the afternoon is dedicated to competitive sporting fixtures, encouraging teamwork, discipline, and school spirit.

We would love to welcome you to Horris Hill and show you what a truly enriching weekly routine looks like. To find out more or arrange a visit, please contact our Admissions Team; we look forward to meeting you.
